Security flaws in VPNs

Some of you might have noticed this recent article about security flaws in VPNs:
http://torrentfreak.com/huge-security-f … nt-100617/

There is nothing new there, and it is more misconfiguration than security flaw.

PPTP is an obsolete protocol with weak encryption, which is why we have always recommended to use OpenVPN. PPTP is provided only for compatibility purpose.

We already block LAN browsing and have designed our VPN so that it is safe to use even if you have absolutely no firewall on your computer.

The only real problem is that VPNs only hide your IPv4 address, not your IPv6 address if you have one.
Almost nobody has an IPv6 connection, so it shouldn't be a problem... unless you are using Windows Vista or 7 with an IPv6-aware bittorrent application.
Windows Vista and 7 offer you an IPv6 address through an automatic tunnel. It is very easy to learn your public IPv4 address from this automatic IPv6 address. According to the conference video linked in the article, Windows uses your real IPv4 address to build the IPv6 tunnel, and bittorrent applications will publish the IPv6 address in the DHT.
Our Windows 7 test box commited suicide a few months ago, so we can't test right now.
However we were able to confirm that if you have a native IPv6 connection, your IPv6 is still visible with the VPN on. Even if your OS is not Windows. Even if you are using OpenVPN. But in that case the IPv4 address cannot be learned from the IPv6 address.

So, what to do ?

As a temporary fix:
Disable automatic IPv6 tunneling, or disable IPv6 support in your bittorrent application, or disable IPv6 in the OS.

As a permanent solution:
We will soon provide IPv6 access in the VPN tunnels (it was already planned anyway), so it will also hide your IPv6 address. But we must wait for the first beta versions of OpenVPN 2.2 (in July or August). Current OpenVPN versions don't have the required features to fully support IPv6.

In all cases, you should disable automatic IPv6 tunneling, as well as any IPv6 public address you don't want to use on the Internet.
Because it is possible to find your others public IPv6 addresses, even with an IPv6 compatible VPN.
